Toothbrush Trivia

Posted .

Toothpaste has been around since about 5,000 BC. That’s approximately when the ancient Egyptians started to use a paste on their teeth. The practice spread to other countries shortly thereafter. You might have been able to buy toothpaste back then, but it may have contained eggshells and animal hooves.  As time went on, toothpaste would include crushed shells and bones, bark, charcoal, salt, herbs, mint, soap and chalk. In fact, soap would continue to be an ingredient until after the World War Two.

Today, you have a much wider selection of toothpastes than your ancestors did. Depending on your needs, there are toothpastes that fight plaque and gingivitis, whiten your teeth, and even toothpastes designed specifically for sensitive teeth. When you select a toothpaste, whatever else you may need from it, make sure that it contains fluoride, which will fight tooth decay and strengthen your teeth.  And of course, you should brush twice a day, every day, for two minutes at a time.

Since every mouth is different, you should talk with our dentist, Dr. Seth Rumley about what kind of toothpaste will best meet your needs. Since he knows your mouth and teeth almost better than you do, he can make a recommendation that will give you the healthy smile you need.
