What Are the Differences Between a Temporary and Traditional Crown?

Posted .

If you’re about to restore your tooth with a dental crown, then be prepared to deal with two different types of restorations. Typically, your dentist, Dr. Seth Rumley, uses a temporary dental crown as well as a traditional dental crown to fully restore your tooth. To tell you a little more about these types of crowns you’ll use during your appointment, our dentist is happy to list the differences between the two.

A temporary dental crown is used when you are waiting for your traditional dental crown to be created. Your dentist will lightly secure it over the abutment to keep it safe while you are out and about. The temporary crown is strong, but it’s not as durable as your traditional crown will be. So, it’s best to avoid eating sticky and hard foods with that tooth.

When your traditional dental crown is created and sent back to our clinic, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and will cement the traditional dental crown over the abutment. The cement is very reliable, so the crown should stay in place for many years, especially if you take good care of it.
